Ok so this is my first blog on the sport of mma. Heck this is my first blog on anything so I hope this goes well. I want to discuss the absurdity of the idea of who is the best "pound for pound" mma fighter in the world. People make these rankings and then argue them like they mean anything. How does anyone know or even begin to argue that a fighter is better at his weight class than another is at his. Ok so George St. Pierre mauled BJ Penn in their rematch at the end of January. Does this make St. Pierre better pound for pound? No, it makes him a better 170 lb fighter than Penn. If St. Pierre attempted to cut to 155 he would be emaciated and lose much of his conditioning and some of his strength. I know now people will say that its hypothetical, what if a 155 lb version of St. Pierre existed, then he could defeat Penn at that weight class. Well, no that wouldn't be the case. Penn is obviously a stronger, faster, more well conditioned fighter at 155 lbs than he is at 170 so this mythical 155 lb version of St. Pierre would be fighting a different animal. A different animal that actually exists in the real world. I know I've been focusing on a Penn-St. Pierre match up but this idea would work for any fighter listed in this mythical pound for pound weight class. What if anyone mentioned in the pound for pound discussion were to fight Fedor at heavyweight or if Fedor dropped to fight anyone on that list. What would happen? Well in the real world Fedor would drop any of them at heavyweight because they would be horribly out of shape to fight at that weight, would have bulked up so much that they lost their speed, or would be fighting at a huge weight disadvantage. In the mythical world we would be led to believe that a heavyweight version of Penn, St. Pierre, or Anderson Silva would keep their smaller version's speed at that weight. How does Fedor deal with a heavyweight Penn or St. Pierre that possess the speed of the 155 lb or 170 lb versions. But on the same token do they keep that speed but their strength as well because then they would be fairly weak for a 206 lb or higher fighter so they probably would be unable to hurt Fedor. I know, this all sounds ridiculous but that is what the pound for pound fighter argument should be considered. There has been discussion of St. Pierre eventually stepping up to 185 to fight Anderson Silva. If Silva would win this fight would it make him a better pound for pound fighter? No it makes him a better fighter at 185. The fight would most likely be completely different at 170. If St. Pierre would win that fight does it make him a better pound for pound fighter? Not really. Sure he would be better at 185 that night but Silva has shown an ability to fight at 205 and he could move up and dominate there. Could St. Pierre follow and remain as good a fighter? I think not. I like to give fighters credit for being great at their weight class and keep it at that. Sure a fighter like Penn has held titles at 155 and 170 in the UFC and that is part of his legacy that should be celebrated but that doesn't make him "pound for pound" the best because he is a great 155 lb fighter that is good but not great at 170. I'll stick to who is best at each weight class. I personally feel that Miguel Torres is the best fighter in the world at 135; Uriah Faber is the best at 145 and will beat Mike Brown when they fight a rematch; BJ Penn is the best fighter at 155 especially when he is focused on that weight class; George St. Pierre is obviously the best at 170 lbs with or without the vaseline; Anderson Silva is without a doubt the best at 185; Quinton Jackson is the best in the world at 205 and when he gets the chance will take back that title in the UFC; and Fedor Emelianenko is the best at heavyweight, sorry Lesnar fans but no he isn't. That makes all of these fighters, in my opinion, great, but as far as who is the best fighter pound for pound it's a pointless discussion that goes nowhere. That being said I'm not one to avoid a pointless argument so here is my pound for pound top 10: 1. George St. Pierre 2. Fedor Emelianenko 3. Anderson Silva 4. Miguel Torres 5. Quinton Jackson 6. Rashad Evans 7. BJ Penn 8. Uriah Faber 9. Forrest Griffin 10. Jon Fitch

UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on August 29, 2009 at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon. It will feature former UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight champion, Randy Couture, facing off against former PRIDE Heavyweight champion and former UFC Interim Heavyweight champion, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
Randy Couture was originally offered a title defense against Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81, however turned the fight down after his resignation from the UFC in October 2007. While Couture and the UFC sorted out their legal issues, Nogueira defeated Tim Sylvia for the UFC Interim Heavyweight Championship becoming the first fighter to hold both PRIDE and UFC title belts. Nogueira was then set to coach against Frank Mir on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter with the two facing off for the Interim Championship after the season aired. In the meantime Couture and the UFC reconciled and it was announced that he would return to the Octagon to defend his title against Brock Lesnar at UFC 91.Neither Couture or Nogueira were successful in their defense efforts and will now face each other in what amounts to the loser bracket of the UFC's mini heavyweight tournament.

As I was wandering through cyberspace I landed at sherdog.com. Typically this is a site that I really enjoy. You can get up-to-date information on the sport of mma on their site. What I was reading today was their top 10 welterweights and who was sitting at number 6 on that list but none other than Paulo Thiago. I even read a fan post on mmajunkie.com that Thiago was 1 to 2 fights away from deserving a shot at GSP. Paulo Thiago? Are you kidding me? Sure he was 10-0 outside of the UFC but he was regarded as a rung on the ladder Koscheck was climbing to get to a title shot in the future before that fight. One flash KO and he is suddenly the 6th best 170 lb fighter in the world. Really? Sure it was an impressive win. Sure it should open people's eyes to what Thiago could potentially become. It does not make him the 6th best welterweight in the world. Included in his 10 fights were only 4 wins were against fighters with records above .500 in their mma careers: Luis Dutra, Ferrid Kheder, Leonardo Pecanha, and Igor Pakoto. Also included in those 10 fights were exactly 3 against fighters with more than 6 fights in their mma career: Dutra, Kheder, and Pecanha. Pakoto has 4 fights in his mma career. Now don't get me wrong,I am not putting down Thiagos' skills. This is not an indictment on the fighter he could become. Thiago could very well become a tremendous fighter and a title contender and I would like to see him get the chance to continue to build up his resume'. I am merely expressing my displeasure with fans and the media's need to make every fighter that pulls off an upset into one of the top fighters in their division immediately. Let him prove his skills at a top level a couple more times and then we can start talking about how high in the rankings he should be and how close he is to a title shot. Here are my top 10 Welterweights: 1. Georges St. Pierre 2. Jon Fitch 3. Thiago Alves 4. Jake Shields 5.Carlos Condit 6. Marcus Davis 7. Mike Swick 8. Josh Koscheck 9. Matt Hughes 10. Nick Thompson
UFC 100 LIVE July 11,2009 on Pay Per View. 10PM ET/7PM PT
UFC 100 is an upcoming mixed martial arts event to be held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) on July 11, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will include two championship bouts (Heavyweight and Welterweight) and a fight between the two coaches of the most recent Ultimate Fighter. The event had been announced as sold-out, before the tickets were even made available to the general public.
The main event will feature a rematch between UFC Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar, and UFC Interim-Heavyweight Champion, Frank Mir. This title unification bout occurred as a result of former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Randy Couture's year-long "resignation" from the company. During his absence, the UFC created an Interim-Heavyweight Championship that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira had won by defeating Tim Sylvia. Nogueira and Mir were scheduled to be opposing coaches in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Nogueira vs Team Mir, and would fight for the interim championship at the conclusion of the show. The Ultimate Fighter is a single-elimination reality series featuring professional MMA fighters competing for the title of The Ultimate Fighter, and a six-figure, multi-fight contract with the UFC.
During the airing of the television program, Couture returned to the company and UFC President Dana White announced that he would defend his title against Lesnar at UFC 91. This meant that the winner of the Couture-Lesnar and Nogueira-Mir matches would face off for the undisputed crown. In his fourth professional fight, Lesnar defeated Couture via technical knockout to become the UFC Heavyweight Champion.Mir was crowned the interim champion after becoming the first fighter to ever finish Nogueira. The match between Lesnar and Mir was now set for UFC 98. However, Mir suffered a knee injury during training and was forced out of the bout.It was announced a day later that the proposed fight would be moved to UFC 100 instead. Lesnar and Mir have fought once before, during Brock's UFC debut at UFC 81. Lesnar controlled much of the bout, and mounted a successful ground and pound attack. During the exchange on the ground, Mir got hold of Lesnar's leg and locked up a kneebar. Lesnar could not escape and was forced to tap out, awarding Mir the victory.
The co-main event will feature Yahoo! Sports' top pound-for-pound fighter (tied with Fedor Emelianenko),Georges St-Pierre, defending his Welterweight Championship against MMAWeekly.com's 2008 Fighter of the Year, Thiago Alves.St-Pierre is a fighter with strong wrestling, and trains with the Canadian Olympic team. His conditioning, strength and athleticism have also been identified as strong attributes.Thiago Alves is well-versed in the Muay Thai striking discipline, and was dubbed by Setanta Sports as the "Muay Thai wrecking ball".Alves enters the fight with consecutive victories over three of the top UFC welterweights in Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, and Karo Parisyan.Meanwhile, St-Pierre enters the bout with successful title defenses against top contender Jon Fitch, and UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn.
The third match on the card will be between two top middleweight contenders, Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping. The two served as opposing coaches on the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter, The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom, with Henderson leading Team USA and Bisping heading Team UK. Henderson is a former Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler also noted for the punching power in his right hand and his excellent chin.He is the first fighter to concurrently hold championship belts in two separate weight classes in a major organization (he did so in PrideFC).Following the sale of PrideFC, Henderson entered the UFC and lost his championships to Quinton Jackson and Anderson Silva in back-to-back unification contests. His latest fight was a decision victory over Rich Franklin at UFC 93. Bisping started his career as a light heavyweight and was the winner of the third season of The Ultimate Fighter. He has compiled a professional MMA record of 18–1, and has been undefeated since moving to middleweight. He enters the bout with victories over Charles McCarthy, Jason Day and Chris Leben. On June 2nd it was announced that the winner of the Henderson-Bisping Fight will get a shot at the UFC Middleweight Championship against Anderson Silva at a later date.
A preliminary match-up between Dong Hyun Kim and Jonathan Goulet was orginally scheduled to be on the card, but Goulet had to pull out of the bout with a shoulder injury. TJ Grant was named as his replacement.

That's right. You read the headline correct. Anderson Silva is going to lose his fight with Thales Leites at UFC 97 this Saturday, April 18. The number one middleweight in the world and one of the fighters in the "best pound for pound" discussion is going to be upset by his fellow Brazillian. This fight has all the makings of an upset. You don't even hear much about it. It's a given in the minds of most that Silva will walk right through Letes using his superior striking ability. Also you hear more talk about Chuck Liddell fighting Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Heck the UFC sign on the 15 here in Las Vegas has a picture of Liddell and Shogun on it. What does the UFC think of Leites chances in this title fight when their own billboard near the Las Vegas strip hypes a fight between a past his prime fighter that is 1-3 in his last 4 fights against a fighter that has nowhere near lived up to his hype since arriving in the UFC? That fight would have been a superfight 3 or 4 years ago. Today? Eh. The Silva fight is for the middleweight title for Pete's sake and it involves someone that Dana White hypes as the best pound for pound in the world and the UFC doesn't even put it on their own billboard? Let's be honest about it. When Silva is discusssed recently the only things you really hear are questions about whether he will be fighting GSP in a potential superfight or will he move up to 205 permanently where the proverbial water is deeper. People have seemed to forget that Thales Leites is 14-1 and has world class grappling skills. His submissions are deadly. He is not a fighter to be slept on. Travis Lutter in his loss to Anderson Silva was able to obtain a mount. You mean to tell me people don't believe Leites can put himself in the same position? He can and will. And believe you me when he finds himself in this position he will hand Silva his third loss by submission and fifth overall. Daiju Takase and Ryo Chonan own submission victories over Silva in their careers. Daiju Takse? Who? Exactly. You mean to tell me none of you believe that Leites is capable of pulling off this mythical feat? I'm not not one of those people that believe just because one guy wins in a certain way that another guy will definitely do the same. MMA doesn't work that way. And I also know Silva hasn't tasted defeat since 2006 against Yushin Okami by DQ and his last submission loss was 2004 to Chonan. But when something that is possible is believed to be impossible that is when big things happen. Sure, on most nights Anderson Silva is the superior fighter. On most nights I would pick him to win by a first round KO. Every fighter loses though. I just believe this is one of those times for Silva. The time and situation are ripe for one of those jaw dropping upsets. Thales Leites is going to pluck that upset right off the tree and bring himself home Anderson Silva's middleweight title along with one of his arms or legs.
The NSAC has released the fighter payouts for UFC 98 “Evans vs. Machida.” Keep in mind, these figures represent the base contracted pay the fighter receives from the promotion. These figures do not include any additional “locker room” bonuses, pay-per-view revenue sharing, or sponsorship money, which in many cases exceeds a fighter’s base pay. These numbers also do not account for taxes, insurance, and license fees.
The night’s biggest money winner was UFC veteran Matt Hughes who pulled in $200,000 for beating Matt Serra plus an additional $60,000 for Fight of the Night. New UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida did quite well for himself raking in a total of $200,000 for winning the title and securing the KO of the Night. The man he beat, Rashad Evans, matched his pay also pocketing $200,000.

It took Hong Man Choi only 1 minute and 17 seconds to stop Jose Canseco at DREAM 9 by way of a submission due to strikes. Anyone surprised out there? Why do I hear crickets? Still, you've got to give the guy credit for either ignorance or bravery. After all, taking on a man that big with legitimate professional kickboxing skills was a leap of faith.
“That’s a big man,” Canseco said after the fight, confirming this notion. “I ran into one of his left jabs and that almost knocked me out. You have no idea how scary it was facing a man that big.”
After landing a right to the body and trying some big hooks Canseco went down after a failed kick attempt. Afterwards, he reported that a knee injury incurred in training was the reason for him losing his balance. Regardless, Choi followed him down and that was all she wrote.
Ortiz back in UFC - With no aches and pains and all smiles!
UFC president Dana White and longtime nemesis Tito Ortiz have made up. Tito is BACK!
The deal was struck after White and Lorenzo Fertitta flew down to Ortiz's California home to bury the hatchet.

Ortiz, 34, said he was hoping to fight at the end of the year, with White suggesting 44-year-old Mark (The Hammer) Coleman as a possible opponent.
"Now that I got it (the surgery) done, no more back soreness, no more numbness going down my legs. I'm waking up with a smile on my face every day for once," he said.
"Tito and I have put all our differences aside and literally have squashed everything and are ready to move forward," White said. "Tito Ortiz will retire in the UFC."
